SOMETHING SPECIAL
for those who love baroque music
Sir John Clerk of Penicuik (1676 — 1755) was a Scottish politician, lawyer, judge, author, architect and composer, an immensely talented man. He studied music under the Italian baroque composer Corelli. His own compositions included five cantatas for solo voice, strings and continuo, music of very high quality and a landmark of musical composition in Scotland at the beginning of the 18th century.
At the Baron’s Craig Hotel on Tuesday June 13th, a group of Edinburgh musicians will provide a musical interlude that includes a selection of Sir John Clerk’s music from 5.30 — 6.30 pm.
Soloist: FRANCIS COOPER ; soprano with early music group, Fires of Love
First violin: HECTOR SCOTT; leader of the Saltire Quartet
Second violin: ALASTAIR HARDIE; specialises in baroque and traditional
Scottish music
Cello: TIM PAXTON; cellist with the BT Scottish Ensemble
Harpsichord: RUARAIDH SUTHERLAND; organ scholar at St Mary’s
Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh
This will be a special and rare event and should not be missed by those with a love of Scottish baroque music. The cost will be £5 payable in advance or at the door if space permits.
Sir John Clerk was the great great grandfather of James Clerk Maxwell and this musical interlude is a component of the James Clerk Maxwell celebration to be held on the same day. Anyone wishing to stay for dinner in the hotel should purchase a ticket in advance (cost £35) which in addition to the musical interlude and the dinner will include anecdotes and an illustrated talk by Professor Sir Graham Hills and Professor Iain MacLeod.
